Virgin Atlantic are looking to start passenger flight from Newcastle Airport to Heathrow and offer direct competition to British Airways.

The airline has outlined its plans to add 84 new destinations, including 12 in the UK and Channel Islands, if the London hub adds a third runway as planned.

The UK routes include Newcastle to Heathrow flights, which currently are only offered by rival British Airways and according to Virgin, the move could lead to lower fares.

James Forrester, managing director of StripeHomes, said: “Virgin have announced some very big plans over the summer to increase the connectivity of the North East to London and the rest of the UK with train travel and now flight plans.

“There is a clear demand for these services as more and more people study, work and live in the North East and the announcements of additional flights to Heathrow will be welcomed by people, the city and businesses in the region.”
